Out of Nairobi: Amboseli National Park

For last weekend, the stop was on Amboseli National Park. I actually have no idea where Amboseli National Park is or what I should see there but Harold and Kris are coming so I feel that I should also go :) Besides, it would be good for me not to open my laptop and think of how I messed up at work for a while. Estimated budget for the entire trip: 10000 KSH + 75 USD entrance fee at Amboseli National Park (did I mention that Kenya really likes to hike prices up for tourists?). It was quite steep, almost as expensive as my Maasai Mara trip last August but hey, I will only be here for a short while, I have to visit as many places as possible and just ignore the cost.

Amboseli is 5 hours away from Nairobi and just like any national parks in Nairobi, be prepared on rough and dusty roads on the way. I have been to 4 so far and trust me, you will get used to it eventually :)

We stayed in Ol Tukai Lodge which is actually inside the reserve and unlike my Maasai Mara trip where I stayed at a campsite and was slowly being eaten by bugs and mosquitoes all night, Ol Tukai is far,far more better. You could get a double room for 14,900 KSH a night, that is already inclusive of buffet lunch, dinner and breakfast. If I were in the Philippines, I would not spend such ridiculous amount to stay at such places but if you want to see places in Kenya, just stop whining about the cost and open your wallet. The view of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Ol Tukai is simply the best, when you step out from your room, it is simply there :) I’m not into mountain stuff but I must admit, the view of the snow caps plus the fogs and the lush surroundings is really breathtaking. The Long and Winding Road to Mara

Went on a road trip to Maasai Mara last weekend (will make a separate post on that), and I guess I could finally say that there’s nothing like sunsets in Africa. I used to watch travel shoes and I once heard a woman saying that sunsets in Africa are spectacular. I could not relate to that for my first 3 weeks living in Nairobi but after last weekend, I have no words to describe the sunset in Africa, no pun intended since I’m a Globe subscriber, but simply amazing.

When in Nairobi: Masai Market

When in Nairobi, try exploring the Masai Market.

Frankly, it reminded me of the flea markets back in the Philippines but my Ghanian roomie was really excited for this mini shopping spree, plus it’s a good way to explore Nairobi other than being stuck in the apartment for the entire weekend.

Masai Market is named after the Masai tribe. You can buy anything from clothes, artwork, bead works, shoes, bags, wooden stuff and my favorite, chess sets intricately carved from soapstone. Nice, a little pricey though. Read more »
